About

To start my Unreal game I wanted to make a short ingame cutscene which can be triggered by the player. This cinematic gave a little introduction to the main characters and how they first met. I first recorded the mocap for the girl sneaking up to the fish. The feeling I wanted was that she was cautious, curious and wanted nothing more than to befriend FishBird. For FishBird I went with keyframe animation in MotionBuilder. Here I wanted a slight feeling of insecurity, laced with curious undertones.

Camera

The cameras, which were based on quick storyboards, were animated in Unreal after making the first draft of animation. With the camera animation I wanted to tell more of a story than my animation could on its own. I focused on different perspectives and framing to tell my story. To make sure the viewer knew what they were looking at to begin with I started with a shot where you could see both characters. Then, to show off the face animation of the girl talking, I went with an over the shoulder shot from the fish looking down at the girl. For the third shot I once again went with a framing where both characters could be seen as well as some of the environment and the space between them. After that I focused on how the two characters slowly got closer to each other and gained each other’s trust. The final shot is one far away with the characters close together.

Ingame Trigger

This cutscene can be triggered by the player ingame leading to the animation of the girl and the FishBird to spawn (as well as transporting the player away so that the sequence can play without showing duplicates of the characters.) When the cutscene has finished the player will once again be back and possessed and the sequence animations will have despawn (so that you can continue to play).
